Why School Meals Are Not Free in the 2022-2023 School Yearīeginning August 8, 2022, the federal government is no longer providing free school meals. The USDA made it possible for school nutrition programs to serve all students free breakfast and lunch through waivers. Meals, foods, and beverages sold or served at our schools are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
